Families on low incomes can get discounts on the price of group lessons, instrument hire and area music centre membership. Discounts are not available for individual lessons.


The student needs to be:

  • Attending an East Sussex state school

  • In full-time primary, secondary or further education (this normally means in school year 13 or below, but there are exceptions)


Level 1 

If your total family income is £20,000 (before tax) or less


You qualify for 25% discount on group lessons, instrument hire and area music centre membership. You must send us a copy of all pages of your current benefit awards document.


Level 2

If your child is registered for free school meals due to your financial circumstances

and you are in receipt of one of the benefits listed below, you will qualify for:

  • 85% discount on instrument hire and area music centre membership, and

  • 25% discount on group lessons

  • Your child’s school may provide a further discount for group lessons (up to a maximum total discount of 85%) and we will apply to the school on your behalf for this additional funding. We will tell you the final amount of discount and price before the lessons start.


For this discount, you will need to be receiving one of the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit – if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

  • Income Support

  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance

  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

  • The Guaranteed element of State Pension Credit

  • Child Tax Credit only, if your annual household income (assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) isn’t over £16,190. Anyone getting Working Tax Credit won’t get free meals regardless of income

  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit


Children will get free school meals if they meet the criteria and are in:

  • Full-time education or;

  • Education both before and after lunchtime.

Fee discounts are only applicable to one instrument (lessons and hire) per child.
