Welcome to Lewes Music Centre!  Join us for some great activities Wednesday and Friday evenings at the Performing Arts Centre and Saturday mornings at Priory School.  We are accepting applications for all the activities listed below.  To join the waiting list, please click Apply beneath the activity you wish to join.

 

*Youth Orchestra requires an audition to join, and the main audition period is in the summer term each year.  We occasionally offer auditions during the year so please apply in you are keen to join outside of our main audition period and a member of our team will get in touch.

Concert Band

Wednesdays

6pm - 7.30pm

Grade 4 +

The diverse repertoire includes arrangements of popular, television and film music in addition to contemporary compositions specifically written for the band. The sessions will improve sight reading and ensemble skills and benefit the development of stamina and technical ability.

Youth String Orchestra

4.30pm - 6pm

Grade 4 +

The orchestra plays in a wide range of styles, from Baroque to contemporary and everything in between. The orchestra performs regularly at Lewes Town Hall, often accompanying a senior soloist. Entry is by audition for pupils of Grade 4 standard.

This is open to advanced orchestral instrumentalists post grade 5. Performing challenging repertoire including Brahms Symphony No.2 and 20th Century works including film scores by Hollywood legend John Powell.

Junior String Orchestra

9am - 10.00am

Grade 1-2

Junior String Orchestra gives students their first experience of playing in a full string orchestra. They will perform a wide variety of music from classical to film and popular music. There are also opportunities to try Viola and Double Bass.

Junior Wind Band

This group provides the first opportunity for players of any woodwind and brass instruments to play together as part of a larger group, develop ensemble skills and learn to follow a conductor. Players should be able to play to the note ranges indicated for grade 1 standard scales.

Guitar

Classical Guitar Group

Saturdays

9am - 10.00am

Beginner - Grade 2

This will experience, for the first time, the joy of playing in a bigger group and performing in a variety of venues. We will work on simple melodies reinforcing listening and reading skills in unison first and in two parts after a few weeks.

Pre Grade 1 - Grade 1

This group is for violinists and cellists that have been learning for over a year and are at a pre grade 1 to grade 1 of learning. They will play tunes together as a mixed ensemble and learn how to follow a conductor.

Keyboard Group

This ensemble enables keyboard and piano players to play and experience a wide variety of styles from rock and pop to traditional pieces arranged for keyboard.

Beginner Strings

Beginner Strings is for children in their early years of learning. They enrich and develop the skills they are learning in their weekly lessons. As well as learning music of different styles and general musicianship, these groups help to reinforce technical points such as posture and bow holds.

Rock & Pop

This band provides pupils with an opportunity to play with other rock and pop instruments playing a wide range of repertoire. Suitable for guitar, bass guitar, keyboard/piano, drums and vocals.

Students need to have a good knowledge of the fretboard and reading skills up to the 5th position. We will explore a wide range of repertoire mostly using pieces in three parts. Many concert opportunities in various venues.

Youth Flute Ensemble

This ensemble explores the varied repertoire for flute choir and gives students the rare opportunity to play piccolo, alto and bass flutes.
