Under the advice of the Government and Department for Education we are working hard to get the South Downs Youth Orchestra back up and running as soon as possible.

Until we can see you again in person, here are some Virtual Music Centre Activities to suit current SDYO Members.

Draws together the area’s most talented young people to share a great classical, film and show repertoire with energy and enthusiasm.

Rehearsals take place on a regular basis. Each season culminates in outstanding and inspiring performances in prestigious concert venues in Sussex.

Founded 40 years ago, SDYO offers members the opportunity to learn from professional tutors and from each other. It is not just about the music, it is about being a better team player, developing confidence, concentration and social skills.


Repertoire has included the following music:

Pictures at an Exhibition: Modest Mussorgsky, Night on a Bare Mountain: Modest Mussorgsky,Piano Concerto No 2 in F: Dmitri Shostakovitch, Hall of the Mountain King: Grieg, Rondo from the 4th Horn concerto: Mozart, Mars from the Planets Suite: Holst. The orchestra has also performed film music from Mission Impossible and Harry Potter, and the wonderful Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. 

Who should apply?

·         woodwind, brass and percussion players of minimum Grade 7 standard

·         string players of Grade 6 standard, aged 11 and above.

Entry is by audition after we receive your completed application form.
